How many months until your visa expires, your loan ends or your wedding day? Months are the natural unit for many plans, but they are tricky because they have different lengths. This guide explains how to count months until a date correctly, and how our free Months Until Calculator calculator handles month ends and leftover days.
Calendar months, not 30-day blocks
A calendar month runs from one date to the same date in the next month: 15 March to 15 April is one month, whether that is 31 or 30 days.
The method
- Count full calendar months from today to the target date.
- Count the leftover days after the last full month.
Example
From 10 October 2026 to 22 February 2027:
- 10 October to 10 February = 4 months
- 10 February to 22 February = 12 days
- Result: 4 months and 12 days (135 days)
Month-end dates
What is one month after 31 January? There is no 31 February, so most systems use the last day of February. The calculator follows this rule. Similarly, one month after 31 March is 30 April.
Why 3 months is not always 90 days
| Start | 3 calendar months later | Days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January (common year) | 1 April | 90 |
| 1 March | 1 June | 92 |
| 1 November | 1 February | 92 |
When a rule says “90 days” rather than “3 months”, count days instead with the Days Until Calculator or Date Difference Calculator.
Common uses
- Loan tenures and remaining instalments
