IELTS Writing Word Count: Tips for Task 1 and Task 2

Word Counter – free online tool guide

Many Pakistani students take IELTS for study, work or migration abroad. In the writing test, word count matters: Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250 words. Writing too little can lower your score, while writing far too much wastes precious time. This guide explains the rules and how to practise with our Word Counter.

The minimums

Task Minimum Suggested time
Task 1 150 words about 20 minutes
Task 2 250 words about 40 minutes

Task 2 carries more weight in the writing score, so do not spend too long on Task 1.

Is there a maximum?

There is no official maximum. However, writing much more than needed increases the chance of mistakes and leaves less time to check your work. Many teachers suggest aiming for about 170 to 190 words in Task 1 and 270 to 300 in Task 2.

What counts as a word?

Generally, every word separated by spaces counts, including small words like “a” and “the”. Numbers written as digits usually count as words. Contractions such as “don’t” count as one word. Practise consistently and you will not need to count during the exam.

Estimating your handwriting count

Count the words in three lines of your normal handwriting and divide by three to get your average words per line. If you average 11 words per line, 250 words needs about 23 lines. Then you can glance at your page instead of counting.

Practising on a computer

If you take computer-delivered IELTS, the screen shows a word count. For practice, type your essays and paste them into the word counter, which also shows sentence counts and repeated words.

Avoid repetition

The word counter’s keyword list shows overused words. Replacing repeated words with accurate synonyms can help your vocabulary score, but do not use unusual words just to look impressive.

Time management

Use a timer while practising: 20 minutes for Task 1, 40 for Task 2. The Online Timer works well for this, and the Study Time Calculator helps you fit IELTS practice around other subjects. For general essay length guidance, read how many words an essay should be.
