What is the Percentage Calculator?

A percentage is a number out of 100. Our percentage calculator answers the four questions people search most: "what is 15% of 2,500", "850 is what percent of 1,100", "what is the percentage increase from 200 to 250" and "what is 1,000 plus 10%".

Students use it to work out marks percentage, shoppers to check a discount, and employees to see the size of a pay rise. Every box updates as you type, so there is no Calculate button to press.

How to use the Percentage Calculator

  1. Pick the question that matches your problem: percent of a number, what percent, percentage change, or add/subtract a percentage.
  2. Type the two numbers into that calculator.
  3. Read the answer in the highlighted box. Change either number and the answer updates instantly.

Formula

X% of Y = Y × X ÷ 100 · X as a % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100 · % change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100

Example

Marks percentage: 850 out of 1,100 = 850 ÷ 1,100 × 100 = 77.27%.

Salary increase: from Rs 80,000 to Rs 92,000 = (92,000 − 80,000) ÷ 80,000 × 100 = 15% increase.

Percent of a number: 18% of Rs 4,500 = 4,500 × 18 ÷ 100 = Rs 810.

How to calculate percentage by hand

Finding a percentage of a number

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. To find 25% of 640, work out 640 × 25 ÷ 100 = 160.

Finding what percent one number is of another

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. 45 out of 60 is 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

Percentage increase and decrease

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. A negative answer is a decrease.

Percentage points vs percent

If an interest rate moves from 10% to 12%, it rose by 2 percentage points but by 20 percent. Mixing these up is the most common percentage mistake.
