The meta description is the short summary under your page title in Google results. It does not directly raise your ranking, but a clear, appealing description can win more clicks than the result above you. This guide explains how to write meta descriptions that fit and persuade, using our Character Counter to check length.
How long should it be?
Google truncates descriptions based on pixel width, typically showing about 150 to 160 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile. Aim for 120 to 158 characters, and put the key message in the first 100.
What a good description includes
- The main keyword, naturally. Google often bolds words that match the search.
- A clear benefit: what the reader gets.
- Something specific: numbers, examples or features.
- A gentle call to action where it fits: “See examples”, “Calculate instantly”.
Examples
| Weak | Better |
|---|---|
| “Welcome to our website. We have many tools.” | “Free EMI calculator for car, home and personal loans. See your monthly payment, total markup and full schedule in seconds.” |
| “Gold calculator page.” | “Gold price calculator for tola and gram in 24K, 22K and 21K, with making charges. Check jewellery value in rupees instantly.” |
Common mistakes
- Writing the same description for every page
- Stuffing keywords unnaturally
- Going far over the length, so the message is cut
- Promising things the page does not deliver
Google may rewrite it
Google sometimes shows a different snippet from your page if it thinks it better matches the search. A well-written description that summarises the page accurately makes this less likely.
Titles matter too
Titles of around 50 to 60 characters are less likely to be cut. Put the main keyword near the start. For capitalisation styles, the Case Converter helps.
Checking many pages
Paste each description into the character counter and watch the indicator. For longer page content, the Word Counter shows length and keyword frequency. For a list of other limits, read character limits for social media and SEO.
