Decimal Hours to Hours and Minutes: A Simple Conversion Guide

Time Calculator – free online tool guide

Timesheet software might show 7.75 hours, while your watch says 7 hours 45 minutes. They are the same thing, but confusing them leads to underpayment or overbilling. This guide explains how to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes, and back, with a handy chart. Our Time Calculator can do both conversions.

Decimal hours to minutes

Multiply the decimal part by 60.

  • 7.75 hours: 0.75 × 60 = 45, so 7 h 45 min
  • 3.2 hours: 0.2 × 60 = 12, so 3 h 12 min
  • 0.9 hours: 0.9 × 60 = 54 minutes

Minutes to decimal hours

Divide minutes by 60.

  • 7 h 20 min: 20 ÷ 60 = 0.333, so 7.33 hours
  • 45 min: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours

Quick chart

Minutes Decimal
5 0.08
10 0.17
15 0.25
20 0.33
30 0.50
40 0.67
45 0.75
50 0.83

The common mistake

Writing 8 hours 30 minutes as 8.30 instead of 8.50. At Rs 500 an hour, 8.30 hours pays Rs 4,150 while 8.50 pays Rs 4,250. Over a month of shifts, that error adds up.

Why payroll uses decimals

Pay is calculated by multiplying hours by an hourly rate. Multiplying 7 h 45 min by Rs 400 directly is awkward; 7.75 × 400 = Rs 3,100 is easy. That is why timesheets and invoices prefer decimal hours. If you invoice by the hour, our Invoice Generator works with decimal quantities.

Rounding rules

Many employers round to the nearest 15 minutes (0.25 hours). Make sure the rule is applied both up and down fairly, and that it is written in your policy.

Weekly totals

Add decimal hours for each day to get your weekly total, then multiply by your rate. The Working Hours Calculator does this and splits regular and overtime hours. To add clock times before converting, see adding and subtracting time.

Converting seconds too

For very precise logs, such as call-centre or machine time, convert seconds to hours by dividing by 3,600. For example, 2 hours 15 minutes 36 seconds is 2 + 15 ÷ 60 + 36 ÷ 3,600 = 2.26 hours. Going the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60 for minutes, then multiply the remaining decimal of the minutes by 60 again for seconds.

Spreadsheets

In Excel or Google Sheets, times are stored as fractions of a day. To turn a time cell into decimal hours, multiply it by 24 and format the result as a number. To turn decimal hours back into a time, divide by 24 and format the cell as time.
