Age Limit for Government Jobs: How to Check Your Eligibility

Age Calculator – free online tool guide

Government job adverts in Pakistan almost always set a minimum and maximum age, such as 18 to 30 years. Thousands of applications are rejected each year simply because candidates calculated their age on the wrong date. This guide explains how age limits work and how to check yours in a minute with our Age Calculator.

Which date is your age counted on?

Adverts usually say the age is calculated “as on the closing date” or “as on” a specific date. That date matters, not the day you apply. If you turn 31 one day before the closing date and the limit is 30, you are over age, even if you applied a week earlier.

To check:

  1. Find the cut-off date in the advert.
  2. Open the age calculator and enter your date of birth.
  3. Set the target date to the cut-off date.
  4. Compare the result with the age range.

What does “18 to 30 years” mean?

Most departments read it as “not less than 18 and not more than 30 on the cut-off date”. In practice, a candidate who is 30 years and 11 months is often still within a 30-year limit, because they have not completed 31 years. However, wording varies, so read the advert and the rules of the recruiting body, such as the Federal Public Service Commission or provincial commissions.

Age relaxation

Many recruitment rules allow extra years for certain groups. Common examples include:

  • Government employees with continuous service
  • Candidates from specified less developed areas
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Widows or children of deceased employees under specific schemes
  • A general relaxation announced by the government for a period

The exact relaxation and who qualifies are set by the relevant rules and change from time to time. Always check the current notification. When relaxation applies, add the allowed years to the upper limit before comparing your age.

Example

Advert: age 21 to 28 on 30 November 2026, with up to 5 years’ relaxation for government servants.

Candidate Date of birth Age on cut-off Eligible?
Ali 2 January 1998 28 years, 10 months Yes, under 29
Sara (government servant) 10 June 1994 32 years, 5 months Yes, within 33
Usman 15 October 1997 29 years, 1 month No, over 28 without relaxation

Documents that prove your age

Recruiters use the date of birth on your CNIC, Matric certificate or B-form. Make sure the dates match across documents before applying. A mismatch can delay or cancel an appointment even after you clear the test.

Plan ahead for upcoming tests

If a test such as CSS has a strict upper limit, work out the last year you are eligible and plan your preparation around it. The Date Calculator (Add or Subtract Days) shows the date you will reach a certain age, and the Study Time Calculator helps you split your preparation time across subjects.
