What is the Bowling Economy Calculator?
A bowler's economy rate is the average number of runs they concede per over. In T20 cricket a bowler with an economy under 7 is gold. The calculator takes runs conceded and overs bowled, converting part-overs correctly.
For wickets, use the Bowling Average Calculator; for the batting side's scoring speed, see the Batting Strike Rate Calculator.
How to use the Bowling Economy Calculator
- Enter runs conceded.
- Enter overs bowled (e.g. 3.4).
- Read the economy rate.
Formula
Economy = runs conceded ÷ (balls ÷ 6)
Example
A bowler with figures of 4-0-27-2 has an economy of 6.75. Bowling 3.4 overs for 31 gives 31 ÷ 3.667 = 8.45.
Overs and balls: 4.3 is not 4.3
In cricket, 4.3 overs means 4 overs and 3 balls, which is 27 balls or 4.5 "real" overs, not 4.3. All our cricket calculators convert overs to balls correctly (overs × 6 + balls). Enter overs in the usual cricket way and the maths is handled for you.
Typical economy rates
| Format | Good economy |
|---|---|
| Test | under 3 |
| ODI | under 5 |
| T20 | under 7.5 |
