What is the Cricket Target Calculator?

The target in limited-overs cricket is the first-innings total plus one. The cricket target calculator shows the target, runs still needed, balls left and the required rate, written the way commentators say it: "Needs 46 from 30 balls".

For a deeper look at the chase use the Required Run Rate Calculator; to estimate the first-innings total before it ends, use the Cricket Score Predictor.

How to use the Cricket Target Calculator

  1. Enter the first-innings total.
  2. Enter the chasing team's score and overs.
  3. Choose the overs per side.
  4. Read the target and what is needed.

Formula

Target = first-innings total + 1 · Runs needed = target − current score

Example

After a first innings of 165, the target is 166. On 120 after 15 overs in a T20, the chasing side needs 46 from 30 balls (9.2 per over).

Overs and balls: 4.3 is not 4.3

In cricket, 4.3 overs means 4 overs and 3 balls, which is 27 balls or 4.5 "real" overs, not 4.3. All our cricket calculators convert overs to balls correctly (overs × 6 + balls). Enter overs in the usual cricket way and the maths is handled for you.

Rain-affected matches

When overs are lost to rain, the target is revised with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, which uses resources (overs and wickets) rather than a simple ratio. This calculator does not compute DLS targets.
