Many gyms in Pakistan have a mix of equipment: some plates marked in kilograms, others in pounds, and dumbbells labelled either way. Fitness apps and online programmes might use a different unit again. This guide helps you convert gym weights between pounds and kilograms and track progress accurately, with our LBS to KG Converter and KG to LBS Converter converters.
Common plate weights
| Pound plates | In kg | Kilogram plates | In lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 lb | 1.13 kg | 1.25 kg | 2.76 lb |
| 5 lb | 2.27 kg | 2.5 kg | 5.51 lb |
| 10 lb | 4.54 kg | 5 kg | 11.02 lb |
| 25 lb | 11.34 kg | 10 kg | 22.05 lb |
| 35 lb | 15.88 kg | 15 kg | 33.07 lb |
| 45 lb | 20.41 kg | 20 kg | 44.09 lb |
Bars
A standard Olympic men’s barbell weighs 20 kg (about 44 lb). Some gyms describe it as 45 lb, which is 20.4 kg. Women’s bars are usually 15 kg. Fixed or “EZ” bars vary, so check the label or weigh them.
Calculating the total on the bar
Add the bar and all plates, then convert once:
Bar 20 kg + two 25 lb plates + two 10 lb plates.
- Plates: 70 lb × 0.4536 = 31.75 kg
- Total: 20 + 31.75 = 51.75 kg
Tracking progress
Pick one unit for your training log and stick to it. If your app uses pounds but your gym uses kilograms, convert each session once and write the result. Mixing units in a log makes progress hard to read.
Progressive overload
Small jumps matter. Going from 20 kg to 22.5 kg is a 12.5% increase on a light lift; use the Percentage Calculator to plan steady increases, often 2.5% to 5% at a time.
Body weight and BMI
If you also track body weight, remember muscle can raise BMI. Our guide on how to calculate BMI explains the limits of the number.
Quick rule
1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb and 1 lb ≈ 0.45 kg. For the exact method and a chart, read how to convert lbs to kg.
Dumbbells in mixed units
Dumbbell racks often step in 5 lb or 2.5 kg increments. A 30 lb dumbbell is 13.6 kg, close to a 14 kg one in a kilogram rack. When switching gyms, match the nearest weight rather than chasing an exact number; a difference of a few hundred grams will not affect your training.
