How to Convert HEIC to JPG (iPhone Photos)

Image Converter – free online tool guide

You try to upload a photo from your iPhone to a job portal or an admission form and get an error: “Invalid file type”. The likely cause is HEIC, the default photo format on modern iPhones. This guide explains what HEIC is, how to convert HEIC to JPG for free with our Image Converter, and how to avoid the problem in future.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores photos at roughly half the size of JPG with similar quality. Apple adopted it in iOS 11. It saves storage on your phone, but many websites, older computers and Windows apps do not support it by default.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Transfer the photo to your computer or open it on your phone’s browser.
  2. Open the image converter and choose the HEIC file.
  3. Select JPG as the output.
  4. Download and upload the JPG to the form.

If your browser cannot open HEIC directly, use one of the methods below first.

Other ways

  • On iPhone: open the photo, tap Share and choose to save or send it; many share options convert to JPG automatically. Emailing a photo to yourself often converts it too.
  • On Mac: open in Preview and export as JPEG.
  • On Windows: install the HEIF image extension from the Microsoft Store, then save as JPG from the Photos app.

Change the camera setting

On iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos will take more space, but you will avoid upload problems.

After converting

Portals often have size limits. Use the Image Compressor to bring the JPG under the limit, and the Image Cropper to frame it properly.

Does converting lose quality?

Converting to JPG uses lossy compression, but at a good quality setting the difference is not visible for normal use. For the differences between formats, read JPG vs PNG vs WebP.

Sharing between iPhone and Android

When you send HEIC photos through WhatsApp, the app usually converts them automatically, so Android friends can open them. Sending through Bluetooth, cables or some cloud drives may keep the original HEIC file, which older Android phones and computers may not open. Converting to JPG first avoids that problem.
