University results usually show two numbers: GPA and CGPA. Students often mix them up, or wonder why a great semester barely moved their overall score. This guide explains GPA vs CGPA clearly, with examples, and shows how to calculate each using our GPA Calculator and CGPA Calculator.
GPA: one semester
GPA (Grade Point Average) measures your performance in a single semester. It is the credit-weighted average of your grade points for that term. Our guide on how to calculate GPA shows the method.
CGPA: the whole degree so far
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all completed semesters:
CGPA = Σ (semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ credits
Example
| Semester | Credits | GPA | GPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 17 | 3.10 | 52.70 |
| 2 | 18 | 3.40 | 61.20 |
| 3 | 16 | 3.75 | 60.00 |
| Total | 51 | 173.90 |
CGPA = 173.90 ÷ 51 = 3.41
A simple average of the three GPAs would give 3.42, slightly different because semesters have different credit loads.
Why CGPA moves slowly
As you complete more credits, each new semester is a smaller share of the total. A 4.00 GPA in semester 7 moves your CGPA much less than it would in semester 2. That is why a strong start makes a big difference.
Which one matters more?
- Scholarships for the next semester: often your latest GPA.
- Degree classification, jobs and further study: usually CGPA.
- Probation rules: many universities check CGPA against a minimum, such as 2.0.
Raising your CGPA
Use the cgpa calculator to set a target: enter your current CGPA and credits, then try different GPAs for the next semester to see what is needed. Our article how to raise your CGPA covers strategies.
A worked target example
Suppose your CGPA is 3.20 after 70 credits and you want 3.30 after the next 18-credit semester. You need 3.30 × 88 = 290.4 total points; you have 3.20 × 70 = 224. The semester must bring 66.4 points, which is a GPA of 66.4 ÷ 18 = 3.69. Doing this sum before the semester starts tells you how hard you need to push in each course, and the Grade Calculator then shows the marks you need on each final.
