How to Calculate GPA: Credit Hours, Grade Points and Examples

GPA Calculator – free online tool guide

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) sums up a whole semester in one number. Scholarships, internships, transfers and job applications all ask for it. Most universities in Pakistan use a 4.00 scale based on the HEC’s recommended grading. This guide explains how to calculate GPA step by step, with an example you can repeat in our free GPA Calculator.

What you need

For each course in the semester:

  • Credit hours, usually 1 to 4
  • Letter grade or marks, which convert to grade points

The formula

GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours

It is a weighted average: a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course.

A commonly used grade point scale

Many Pakistani universities follow a scale like this (check your own university’s handbook, as cut-offs differ):

Marks Grade Points
85 and above A 4.00
80–84 A− 3.70
75–79 B+ 3.30
71–74 B 3.00
68–70 B− 2.70
64–67 C+ 2.30
61–63 C 2.00
58–60 C− 1.70
54–57 D+ 1.30
50–53 D 1.00
Below 50 F 0.00

Worked example

Course Credits Grade Points Credits × points
Calculus 3 A− 3.70 11.10
Physics 4 B+ 3.30 13.20
English 3 A 4.00 12.00
Programming 4 B 3.00 12.00
Pakistan Studies 2 A 4.00 8.00
Total 16 56.30

GPA = 56.30 ÷ 16 = 3.52

Common mistakes

  • Taking a simple average of grade points, ignoring credits
  • Using another university’s scale
  • Forgetting a lab course with 1 credit
  • Including pass/fail courses that do not count towards GPA

GPA vs CGPA

GPA is for one semester. CGPA combines all semesters, weighted by their credit hours. Use our CGPA Calculator for that, and read GPA vs CGPA to understand the difference.

Converting to percentage

Employers sometimes ask for a percentage. Conversion depends on your university’s formula; see GPA to percentage. For marks-based percentage, the Percentage Calculator is simple and quick.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours, add them up and divide by total credit hours.

What is a good GPA?

Above 3.0 is generally good and above 3.5 is very strong, though it depends on your field and university.

Do all courses count towards GPA?

Usually only graded credit courses; pass/fail and non-credit courses typically do not.

Is the grade scale the same at all universities?

No. Many follow the HEC recommendation, but check your own university’s scale.
