Every year on 14 August, Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day with flags, national songs and fireworks. Behind the celebration lies a long struggle and great sacrifice. This guide summarises the history of Pakistan Independence Day, with a live countdown on our Days Until 14 August page.
The Pakistan movement
The idea of a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent grew in the early 20th century. Allama Muhammad Iqbal outlined it in his 1930 Allahabad address, and the All-India Muslim League, led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, carried the movement forward.
The Lahore Resolution
On 23 March 1940, the Muslim League passed the Lahore Resolution, demanding independent states in Muslim-majority areas. This day is now Pakistan Day; see Days Until Pakistan Day (23 March).
Independence
The Indian Independence Act 1947 created two dominions. Pakistan came into being on 14 August 1947, coinciding with 27 Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. Quaid-e-Azam became the first Governor-General.
Partition
Independence came with one of history’s largest migrations. Millions crossed new borders and many lost their lives. Families still tell these stories, and they are part of why the day is so emotional.

National symbols
The flag, adopted on 11 August 1947, has a dark green field for the Muslim majority and a white stripe for minorities, with a crescent for progress and a star for light and knowledge. The national anthem, written by Hafeez Jalandhari with music by Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla, was officially adopted in 1954. Teaching children these symbols is a simple way to pass on the meaning of the day.
