Shab-e-Barat: Significance of the 15th Night of Shaban

Days Until Shab-e-Barat – free online tool guide

Shab-e-Barat is observed on the night between the 14th and 15th of Shaban, the month before Ramadan. In Pakistan it is a night of prayer, seeking forgiveness and remembering loved ones who have passed away. This guide explains its significance and common practices in simple terms, with a live countdown on our Days Until Shab-e-Barat page.

The name

“Shab” is Persian for night and “Barat” is often translated as freedom or salvation, reflecting the hope of forgiveness. In Arabic the night is called Laylat al-Nisf min Shaban, the night of the middle of Shaban.

Its significance

Several narrations mention Allah’s mercy and forgiveness on the night of the 15th of Shaban. Scholars differ on the strength of some narrations and on specific practices, but many Muslims spend the night in worship and repentance. Follow the guidance of scholars you trust.

How it is observed in Pakistan

  • Nafl prayers and Quran recitation at home or in mosques
  • Dua and seeking forgiveness, including for deceased relatives
  • Visiting graves and praying for the dead
  • Charity and sharing food, such as halwa, with neighbours
  • Fasting on 15 Shaban by some

Avoiding harmful customs

Fireworks and firecrackers have become common in some places but cause injuries and disturb others. Most scholars discourage them; the spirit of the night is worship and reflection.

Preparing for Ramadan

Shab-e-Barat comes about two weeks before Ramadan, a natural reminder to prepare. Read using Shaban to prepare for Ramadan and see the Days Until Ramadan countdown.

When is Shab-e-Barat?

It depends on the sighting of the Shaban moon. Check the Islamic date with Islamic Date Today (Hijri Converter), and keep count of istighfar with the Tasbeeh Counter.

A simple plan for the night

Pray Isha in congregation, recite some Quran, make sincere dua for yourself, family and the ummah, and seek forgiveness. Rest when needed rather than exhausting yourself; quality and sincerity matter more than staying up all night.
