How to Calculate Your Weighted Grade in a Course

Grade Calculator – free online tool guide

Most university courses do not grade you on one exam. Assignments, quizzes, a mid-term, projects and a final each count for a set percentage. Knowing your weighted grade during the semester tells you exactly where you stand and how much the remaining work matters. This guide explains the method with examples, using our free Grade Calculator.

The formula

Weighted grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weight of graded work

Scores are percentages; weights are the share each item has in the final grade.

Example course outline

Component Weight Your score
Assignments 15% 88%
Quizzes 10% 75%
Mid-term 25% 70%
Project 10% not graded yet
Final exam 40% not taken yet

Calculating your current grade

Only the graded items count so far:

  • Assignments: 88 × 15 = 1,320
  • Quizzes: 75 × 10 = 750
  • Mid-term: 70 × 25 = 1,750
  • Total: 3,820 ÷ 50 (weights so far) = 76.4%

So you are currently at 76.4% on the half of the course that has been graded.

Why weights matter

A 90% on a 10% quiz adds only 9 points to the final grade, while a 60% on a 40% final costs you a lot. Focus your effort on the heaviest components.

Points instead of percentages

If you got 18 out of 25 on an assignment, convert it first: 18 ÷ 25 × 100 = 72%. The Percentage Calculator does this quickly.

Turning the grade into a letter and GPA

Your university’s scale converts the final percentage into a letter grade and grade points. Those feed into your semester GPA; use the GPA Calculator after results.

Plan the rest of the semester

Once you know your current grade, you can work out what you need on the remaining items. Read what you need on your final exam for that calculation.
