Many universities and colleges in Pakistan require students to attend at least 75% or 80% of classes to sit the final exam. Falling short can mean losing a whole course. Keeping track is easy once you know how to calculate attendance percentage. This guide explains the method and the two questions every student asks, with our free Attendance Calculator.
The formula
Attendance % = classes attended ÷ classes held × 100
If 48 classes were held and you attended 39: 39 ÷ 48 × 100 = 81.25%.
How many classes can I miss?
To stay above a required percentage r, the maximum classes you can still miss (assuming no more classes are counted) depend on future classes too. A simple way: count the classes left in the semester, then check the final percentage if you miss a few.
With 39 attended out of 48, and 16 classes left (64 total), at a 75% rule you need 48 attended in total. You can miss up to 7 of the remaining 16.
How many classes must I attend to recover?
If you are below the limit:
Classes needed in a row = (r × held − 100 × attended) ÷ (100 − r)
With 33 attended out of 48 at 75%: (75 × 48 − 100 × 33) ÷ 25 = (3,600 − 3,300) ÷ 25 = 12 classes. You must attend the next 12 classes without missing any.
Quick reference (out of 60 classes total)
| Requirement | Minimum classes to attend |
|---|---|
| 75% | 45 |
| 80% | 48 |
| 85% | 51 |
Lab and theory counted separately
Some universities count lab and theory attendance separately, or count a lab as two class hours. Check your handbook.
Medical and official leave
Institutions handle documented absences differently. Some excuse them, others do not. Keep medical certificates and apply on time.
Track weekly
Update your numbers every week, and mark your exam dates with the Days Until Calculator calculator. The earlier you notice a problem, the easier it is to fix. Combine this with the Grade Calculator to keep both attendance and marks on track, and see what to do about short attendance.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate attendance percentage?

How many classes can I miss with 75% attendance?
Up to a quarter of all classes in the semester, minus any already missed.
Does medical leave count?
It depends on your institution’s policy.
