How to Estimate Packaging Materials per Order

Packaging Material Calculator – free online tool guide

Running out of boxes or tape in the middle of a sales rush stops dispatch. Buying too much ties up cash and space. Estimating packaging materials per order makes planning easy. This guide shows a simple method with a worked example, using our free Packaging Material Calculator.

List materials for a typical order

Material Per order
Box (medium) 1
Bubble wrap 0.5 m²
Paper filler 0.2 kg
Packing tape 1.2 m
Shipping label 1
Invoice or insert card 1

Multiply by monthly orders

For 500 orders a month:

Material Monthly need
Boxes 500
Bubble wrap 250 m²
Paper filler 100 kg
Tape 600 m
Labels 500
Inserts 500

Convert to purchase units

  • Tape rolls of 100 m: 600 ÷ 100 = 6 rolls.
  • Bubble wrap rolls of 1 m × 50 m (50 m²): 250 ÷ 50 = 5 rolls.
  • Labels on rolls of 500: 1 roll.

Add a safety margin of 10 to 20% for wastage and busy days, using the Percentage Calculator.

Different order types

If you ship small and large orders, estimate each type separately and add them up.

Seasonal peaks

Orders often jump before Eid, during sales such as White Friday and at the start of winter or summer collections. Look at last year’s order numbers for the same months and stock up two to three weeks before each peak. Suppliers also get busy in these periods, so order early.

Storage

Keep boxes flat in a dry place off the floor, since moisture weakens corrugated board. Store tape and labels away from heat, which can affect adhesive.
