Corrugated Box Calculator – free online tool guide

Corrugated boxes come in many styles, each suited to different products and handling. Choosing the right style can save material, improve strength and speed up packing. This guide explains common corrugated box styles, including their international FEFCO codes, with our free Corrugated Box Calculator for sizing and material estimates.

Regular slotted container (RSC) – FEFCO 0201

The most common box. All flaps are the same length (half the width), so outer flaps meet in the middle when closed. It is economical and works for most products.

Half slotted container (HSC)

Like an RSC with no top flaps; open-top boxes often used with a separate lid or for display trays.

Full overlap (FOL) – FEFCO 0203

Outer flaps run the full width, overlapping completely. This gives extra strength and cushioning at top and bottom, useful for heavy or long items.

Die-cut mailer boxes – FEFCO 0427

Cut to shape from a single sheet with tuck-in flaps. Popular for e-commerce and subscription boxes because they look neat and need little or no tape.

Telescope boxes

A separate lid and base slide over each other. Common for shoes, gifts and premium packaging.

Comparison

Style Strength Material use Best for
RSC Good Low General shipping
FOL Very good at ends Higher Heavy items
Die-cut mailer Good Medium E-commerce, retail
Telescope Good Higher Gifts, shoes, premium goods

Material and cost

Different styles use different board areas for the same internal size. An FOL uses more board than an RSC because of the longer flaps. Estimate material with the Cardboard Sheet Calculator.

Printing

Die-cut and telescope boxes are often printed for branding. RSCs are usually plain or flexo-printed with simple logos.

Dielines

Custom styles are produced from a dieline, the flat layout of cuts and folds. Read what is a box dieline.
