With the final exam approaching, one question matters most: what score do I need to get the grade I want? Instead of guessing, you can calculate it exactly from your current grade and the exam’s weight. This guide shows the formula with examples, and how our Grade Calculator does it instantly.
The formula
Required final score = (target − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Use decimals for weights (40% = 0.40).
Example
Your current grade is 76.4% on everything except the final. The final is worth 50%. You want 80% overall.
(80 − 76.4 × 0.50) ÷ 0.50 = (80 − 38.2) ÷ 0.50 = 83.6%
You need 83.6% on the final.
Different targets
| Target overall | Score needed on a 50% final |
|---|---|
| 70% | 63.6% |
| 75% | 73.6% |
| 80% | 83.6% |
| 85% | 93.6% |
This makes it easy to decide what is realistic.
If the number is above 100%
The target is not possible with the final alone. Check whether there are other marks left, such as a project or extra credit, and adjust your target. Sometimes protecting a lower grade boundary, such as staying above a B, is the realistic goal.
Plan your revision
- List the topics on the final.
- Prioritise topics with the most marks.
- Practise past papers under time limits.
- Split study time across all subjects with the Study Time Calculator.
Do not forget attendance
Many universities bar students with low attendance from the final. Check your standing with the Attendance Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Subtract the points you already have from your target and divide by the final’s weight.
What if I need more than 100%?
The target cannot be reached with the final alone; aim for the highest realistic grade.
Does the final always count the most?
Often, but check your course outline for the exact weights.
