How Many Labels on a Roll? Calculate From Length or Diameter

Label Roll Calculator – free online tool guide

When ordering label rolls, you need to know how many labels each roll holds and whether the roll fits your printer. Suppliers quote either the label count, the roll length or the outer diameter. This guide shows how many labels are on a roll and how to calculate it, with our free Label Roll Calculator.

From roll length

Labels per roll = Roll length ÷ (Label height + Gap)

Example: a 50 m roll of labels 150 mm tall with a 3 mm gap:

50,000 ÷ 153 = 326 labels

Across the roll

If the roll has more than one label across (multi-across), multiply by the number across.

From outer diameter (OD)

When only diameters are known:

Roll length = π × (OD² − Core²) ÷ (4 × Thickness)

where thickness is label plus liner thickness.

Example: OD 200 mm, core 76 mm, thickness 0.15 mm:

π × (40,000 − 5,776) ÷ 0.6 ≈ 179,200 mm, or about 179 m.

With 153 mm per label: 179,200 ÷ 153 ≈ 1,171 labels.

Common core sizes

Core Typical use
25 mm (1 in) Small desktop printers
38 mm (1.5 in) Some desktop printers
76 mm (3 in) Industrial printers and applicators

Printer limits

Desktop thermal printers often take rolls up to around 100 to 130 mm OD; industrial printers take 200 mm or more. Check before ordering.

Ordering

Monthly labels ÷ labels per roll = rolls needed. Add a margin for test prints and misprints. See the Packaging Quantity Calculator.

For core and OD details, read label roll core size and OD. For label sizes, see the Label Size Calculator.

Check the supplier’s figures

Suppliers usually print the label count on the roll box. Weigh or measure a sample roll when you first order from a new supplier to confirm the count matches.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate labels per roll?

Roll length divided by label height plus the gap.

Can I calculate from roll diameter?

Yes, using outer and core diameters and material thickness.

What core size do industrial printers use?

Usually 76 mm (3 inch).
