Cropping is the simplest edit that makes the biggest difference. It removes distractions, straightens the focus and fits a photo to the shape a platform or form needs. This guide explains how to crop a photo with the right ratio and good framing, using our free Image Cropper.
How to crop
- Open the image cropper and choose your photo.
- Pick a ratio (1:1, 4:5, 16:9, passport) or crop freely.
- Drag the box to frame the subject.
- Download the cropped image.
Everything runs in your browser, so photos stay on your device.
Common ratios
| Ratio | Use |
|---|---|
| 1:1 | Profile pictures, Instagram posts, product photos |
| 4:5 | Instagram portrait posts |
| 16:9 | YouTube thumbnails, presentations, widescreen |
| 9:16 | Stories, WhatsApp status |
| 3:2 / 4:3 | Standard prints and camera photos |
| 35:45 | Passport and visa photos |
Framing tips
- Rule of thirds: place eyes or the main subject on the lines that divide the frame into thirds.
- Leave headroom: in portraits, a little space above the head looks natural.
- Do not cut at joints: avoid cropping exactly at wrists, knees or ankles.
- Remove distractions: crop out bright objects at the edges that pull the eye.
- Straighten horizons: a tilted horizon is easy to notice.
Crop before resizing
If a form wants an exact size, crop to its ratio first, then resize with the Image Resizer. That prevents stretching.
Cropping reduces pixels
Heavy cropping throws away pixels. If you crop a small part of a photo and then enlarge it, it may look soft. Shoot closer when you can.
Product photos
For online stores, crop products to a consistent square with similar margins. It makes the shop look professional. Compress for fast loading with the Image Compressor.
Passport and ID photos
These have strict rules about head size, background and position. Read passport photo dimensions before cropping your own.
Cropping for different platforms from one photo
If you plan to post the same photo on Instagram, a WhatsApp status and a website banner, take the photo with extra space around the subject. You can then crop a square, a tall 9:16 and a wide 16:9 version from the same shot without cutting off anything important. Keeping the subject near the centre makes all three crops easier.
