Online sellers in Pakistan often find courier bills higher than expected for light but large parcels. The reason is volumetric weight. Understanding it helps you price products, choose packaging and compare courier services. This guide explains volumetric weight for domestic and international parcels, with our free Volumetric Weight Calculator.
The formula
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000
Some services use 6,000 or other divisors. Check your courier’s rate card.
Chargeable weight
You pay for whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight.
| Parcel | Size (cm) | Actual | Volumetric | Charged |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shoes | 35 × 25 × 15 | 1.2 kg | 2.6 kg | 2.6 kg (rounded to 3 kg if per kg) |
| Phone accessory | 20 × 15 × 5 | 0.3 kg | 0.3 kg | 0.5 kg (minimum slab) |
| Kitchen set | 45 × 35 × 30 | 4 kg | 9.45 kg | 9.5 kg |
Many local couriers charge in slabs such as up to 0.5 kg, 1 kg and each additional kg.
Domestic e-commerce
For small items like clothes and accessories, volumetric weight usually does not apply because parcels are small. It matters for shoes, kitchenware, toys, home décor and large boxes.
International parcels
International express services almost always apply volumetric weight. A parcel to the UK or US with a large box can cost far more than its actual weight suggests.

Tips to reduce it
- Use the smallest safe box; see how to reduce volumetric weight.
- Use poly mailers for soft goods.
- Remove bulky retail boxes when safe and allowed.
Check courier bills
Measure your parcels yourself and keep a record. If the courier charges a much higher weight, ask for the measured dimensions.
