How Much Packing Tape Per Box? Calculation and Roll Planning

Packaging Tape Calculator – free online tool guide

Packing tape is cheap per metre but adds up across thousands of boxes. Knowing how much tape each box uses helps you order the right number of rolls and choose between taping methods. This guide shows how much tape per box you need, with examples, using our free Packaging Tape Calculator.

Single strip method

One strip along the centre seam on the top and one on the bottom, each extending down the sides.

Tape per strip = Box length + 2 × overhang

A common overhang is 5 to 7 cm down each end.

Example: a 40 × 30 × 30 cm box with 6 cm overhang:

  • Per strip: 40 + 12 = 52 cm
  • Top and bottom: 2 × 52 = 104 cm (about 1.04 m)

H-tape method

Adds strips across both edge seams on top and bottom, forming an “H”. Stronger and more secure for heavy boxes.

Per face: centre strip (L + 2 × overhang) + two edge strips (W + 2 × overhang each)

Example: 52 + 2 × (30 + 12) = 52 + 84 = 136 cm per face, so 272 cm (2.72 m) for top and bottom.

Comparison

Method Tape per box (40 × 30 × 30) Boxes per 100 m roll
Single strip, top and bottom 1.04 m 96
H-tape, top and bottom 2.72 m 36

Tape widths

Width Use
48 mm (2 inch) Standard for most boxes
72 mm (3 inch) Heavy boxes, wider seams

Choosing the method

  • Light to medium boxes: single strip is usually enough.
  • Heavy, export or high-value boxes: H-tape.

Read H-taping vs single strip.

Monthly planning

For 600 boxes a month with single strip: 600 × 1.04 = 624 m, so seven 100 m rolls (with a little spare). Plan with the Packaging Material Calculator.
