How Much Bubble Wrap Do I Need? Simple Calculation

Bubble Wrap Calculator – free online tool guide

Buying bubble wrap by guesswork leads to running out mid-week or overstocking rolls that take up space. A quick surface area calculation gives a good estimate for any product. This guide shows how much bubble wrap you need per item and per month, with our free Bubble Wrap Calculator.

Step 1: Surface area of the item

For a box-shaped item:

Surface area = 2 × (L × W + L × H + W × H)

Example: an item 30 × 20 × 10 cm:

2 × (600 + 300 + 200) = 2,200 cm² = 0.22 m²

Step 2: Number of layers

Item Layers
Sturdy items, scratch protection 1
Electronics, boxed goods 2
Glass, ceramics, very fragile 3 or more

Step 3: Add overlap

Add about 20% for overlap and folding at corners.

Bubble wrap needed = Surface area × Layers × 1.2

For our example with 2 layers: 0.22 × 2 × 1.2 = 0.53 m².

Step 4: Monthly quantity

For 400 such items a month: 0.53 × 400 = 212 m².

Roll size Area per roll Rolls needed
1 m × 50 m 50 m² 5 (4.2 rounded up)
1.5 m × 100 m 150 m² 2 (1.4 rounded up)

Bubble sizes

  • Small bubbles (about 10 mm): surface protection and light items.
  • Large bubbles (about 25 mm): cushioning heavier items and filling space.

Cylindrical items

For bottles: surface area ≈ π × diameter × height + 2 × π × radius². Wrap the body and add extra at the ends.

Combine with a snug box

Wrap protects the product, but it should still sit firmly in a right-sized box; see the Box Size Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate bubble wrap needed?

Surface area × number of layers × about 1.2 for overlap.

How many layers for glass items?

Usually three or more, plus a well-padded box.

Which bubble size should I use?

Small bubbles for surface protection, large bubbles for cushioning.
