APA 7 Citation Guide: Websites, Books and Journal Articles

Citation Generator – free online tool guide

Most universities in Pakistan ask students to reference sources in APA style, especially in social sciences, education, business and psychology. APA 7th edition simplified several rules compared with older versions. This guide shows the formats you will use most, with examples, and how our free Citation Generator builds them for you.

The basic pattern

Author, A. A. (Year). *Title of work*. Source.

Every reference list entry needs the four elements: who, when, what and where.

Website

Khan, A. (2026, March 14). *How climate change is affecting rainfall in South Asia*. Dawn. https://www.example.com/article

  • Include the specific date if available.
  • If there is no author, start with the title.
  • APA 7 does not require “Retrieved from” unless the content is designed to change.

Book

Ahmed, S. (2021). *Research methods for social sciences* (2nd ed.). Oxford University Press.

APA 7 no longer requires the publisher’s location.

Journal article

Malik, R., & Hussain, T. (2024). Online learning in Pakistani universities. *Journal of Education Research*, 12(3), 45–60. https://doi.org/xx.xxxx/xxxx

Include the DOI as a link when available.

In-text citations

Situation Example
One author (Khan, 2026)
Two authors (Malik & Hussain, 2024)
Three or more (Raza et al., 2023)
Direct quote (Khan, 2026, p. 12)

Common mistakes

  • Using “et al.” for two authors (APA 7 uses it for three or more)
  • Capitalising every word of article titles (use sentence case)
  • Forgetting italics for book and journal titles
  • Mixing APA with another style in the same paper

Formatting the reference list

Arrange entries alphabetically by author surname, use a hanging indent and double spacing, and start the list on a new page titled “References”.

Word limits

References are usually excluded from essay word counts, but check your instructions. Track your text with the Word Counter, and if your university wants the final paper as a PDF, convert it with the Word to PDF tool so the formatting stays intact. For a comparison with other styles, read APA vs MLA vs Harvard.
