Results day brings one question for every student: what is my percentage? Admission forms, scholarships and job applications all ask for it. This guide explains how to calculate marks percentage for Matric, Intermediate (FSc, ICS, FA) and university, and how to check it with our free Percentage Calculator.
The formula
Marks percentage = obtained marks ÷ total marks × 100
That’s all there is to it. The only tricky part is using the correct total.
Matric example
Most boards set Matric (SSC) total marks at 1,100 for the full two years. If you obtained 968:
968 ÷ 1,100 × 100 = 88%
Intermediate example
Intermediate (HSSC) totals are also commonly 1,100 for part 1 and part 2 combined. If you scored 902:
902 ÷ 1,100 × 100 = 82%
Your board may use a different total, so always read it from your result card.
University semester example
Universities often give marks out of 100 per course. Add the obtained and total marks of all courses:
| Course | Obtained | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 78 | 100 |
| Physics | 84 | 100 |
| English | 71 | 100 |
| Programming | 90 | 100 |
| Total | 323 | 400 |
323 ÷ 400 × 100 = 80.75%. Many universities use GPA instead; see our GPA Calculator and CGPA Calculator for that system.
Grades and divisions
Boards and universities map percentages to grades, for example A+ for 80% and above or First Division for 60% and above. Each institution publishes its own scale, so check the official one before writing a grade on a form.
Percentage for admissions
University admission merit is usually not just your percentage. It combines Matric, FSc and entry test marks with set weightages. Our University Aggregate Calculator calculates that aggregate for NUST, UET, FAST and MDCAT.
Tips for accuracy
- Use the grand total from your result card, not the sum of the subjects you remember.
- Round only at the end, and usually to two decimal places.
- If you have improved a paper, use the updated result.

Converting percentage back to marks
Sometimes you know a percentage and need the marks, for example when an advert asks for “at least 60% marks”. Multiply the total by the percentage and divide by 100: 60% of 1,100 is 660 marks. If your board total is 1,200, the same 60% needs 720 marks. Our Percentage Calculator does this in the “X% of Y” mode, so you can see exactly how many marks you need before applying.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my Matric percentage?
Divide your obtained marks by the total (commonly 1,100) and multiply by 100.
What is 850 out of 1,100 in percentage?
850 ÷ 1,100 × 100 = 77.27%.
Is percentage the same as aggregate?
No. Aggregate combines several results with weightages; percentage is one result out of its total.
