Shipping containers come in standard sizes, but their internal dimensions, door openings and weight limits decide what you can actually load. This guide lists container dimensions for the most common types, with our free Container Volume Calculator to compare capacity.
Standard containers (typical values)
| Spec | 20 ft | 40 ft | 40 ft high cube |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal length | 5.90 m | 12.03 m | 12.03 m |
| Internal width | 2.35 m | 2.35 m | 2.35 m |
| Internal height | 2.39 m | 2.39 m | 2.69 m |
| Door width | 2.34 m | 2.34 m | 2.34 m |
| Door height | 2.28 m | 2.28 m | 2.58 m |
| Volume | about 33 CBM | about 67 CBM | about 76 CBM |
| Tare weight | about 2,200 kg | about 3,700 kg | about 3,900 kg |
Values vary slightly by manufacturer; check the container’s CSC plate and the shipping line’s specs.
Payload
Maximum gross weight is often 30,480 kg. Payload = maximum gross − tare, so roughly 28,000 kg for a 20 ft and 26,700 kg for a 40 ft. Road limits at origin or destination may be lower.
Usable volume
Real loads rarely fill every centimetre. Typical usable volumes for cartons are about 25 to 28 CBM (20 ft), 55 to 60 CBM (40 ft) and 65 to 70 CBM (40 ft HC).
Other container types
| Type | Use |
|---|---|
| Reefer | Temperature-controlled goods; slightly less internal space |
| Open top | Tall cargo loaded by crane |
| Flat rack | Oversized machinery, vehicles |
| 45 ft high cube | Extra length for light cargo, on some routes |
Choosing a size
- Heavy, dense cargo: a 20 ft often reaches weight limits before volume.
- Light, bulky cargo: a 40 ft or 40 ft HC gives more space for little extra cost.
