Road signs in Pakistan show kilometres, while American and British sources often use miles. Runners talk about 5K and 10K races, car apps may switch units, and travel blogs mix both. This guide explains how to convert km to miles (and back) with the exact factor, a clever shortcut and a chart. Our free KM to Miles Converter converter does any distance instantly.
The formula
miles = kilometres × 0.621371
kilometres = miles × 1.609344
One mile is exactly 1.609344 km.
Examples
- 10 km × 0.621371 = 6.21 miles
- 375 km (roughly Lahore to Islamabad by motorway) × 0.621371 = 233 miles
- 26.2 miles (marathon) × 1.609344 = 42.2 km
The Fibonacci shortcut
Consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence (2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89…) happen to be close to the km-to-mile ratio. 5 miles ≈ 8 km, 8 miles ≈ 13 km, 13 miles ≈ 21 km. It is a fun and surprisingly accurate way to estimate.
Another quick trick
Multiply km by 6 and divide by 10. 50 km × 6 ÷ 10 = 30 miles (exact 31.07). Slightly low, but quick.
Quick chart
| km | miles |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0.62 |
| 5 | 3.11 |
| 10 | 6.21 |
| 21.1 | 13.1 |
| 42.2 | 26.2 |
| 100 | 62.14 |
| 500 | 310.69 |
Speed limits
Speeds convert the same way: 120 km/h ≈ 75 mph, and 70 mph ≈ 113 km/h. Our Speed Converter handles km/h, mph, m/s and knots.
Fuel economy
Pakistan uses km per litre, the US uses miles per gallon. Converting requires both distance and volume, so use Liters to Gallons along with this converter, or simply measure in km/l and use the Petrol Cost Calculator.
Running distances
Race names use kilometres even in the US. A 5K is 3.1 miles and a 10K is 6.2 miles. See running distances in km and miles for pace conversions.
Nautical miles are different
Ships and aircraft use the nautical mile, which is exactly 1.852 km, longer than a normal (statute) mile of 1.609 km. Speeds at sea and in the air are measured in knots, meaning nautical miles per hour. If you see a distance in “nm” on a flight map, multiply by 1.852 for kilometres.
Distances in Pakistan
Approximate road distances help put the conversion in context: Karachi to Lahore is roughly 1,200 km by road (about 750 miles), and Lahore to Islamabad roughly 375 km by motorway (about 233 miles). Exact figures depend on the route you take.
