Farmers in Pakistan talk in acres, kanals and murabbas, while international reports, research papers and many agricultural programmes use hectares. If you want to compare crop yields, read a foreign farming guide or fill an international form, you need to convert acres to hectares. This guide shows how, with examples. Our free Acres to Hectares converter does it instantly.
The factors
hectares = acres × 0.404686
acres = hectares × 2.47105
One hectare is 10,000 square metres, about 2.47 acres. One acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square metres.
Examples
- 12.5 acres × 0.4047 = 5.06 ha
- 25 acres (one murabba) × 0.4047 = 10.12 ha
- 3 ha × 2.471 = 7.41 acres
Pakistani land units
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 acre | 8 kanal = 160 marla |
| 1 kanal | 20 marla |
| 1 murabba (square) | 25 acres |
| 1 acre | 0.4047 hectares |
| 1 kanal | about 0.0506 hectares |
So 1 kanal is about one twentieth of a hectare.
Converting kanal to hectares
Divide kanals by 8 to get acres, then multiply by 0.4047.
40 kanal = 5 acres = 2.02 ha.
Yield per acre vs per hectare
Crop yields are often given in maunds per acre locally and in tonnes per hectare internationally. To compare:
- Convert maunds to kilograms (1 maund = 40 kg); see Maund (Mann) to KG.
- Convert per acre to per hectare by multiplying by 2.471.
Example: 50 maunds of wheat per acre = 2,000 kg per acre = 4,942 kg per hectare, about 4.9 tonnes per hectare. Read crop yield conversions for more.
Square metres and square feet
For smaller areas, convert to square metres or square feet. One acre is 43,560 sq ft, and one hectare is about 107,639 sq ft. For residential plots, the Marla / Kanal Converter is more convenient.
Measuring irregular fields
Fields are rarely perfect rectangles. For a rough estimate, split the field into rectangles and triangles, measure each in feet or metres, add up the areas and then convert. A triangle’s area is half of base × height. For legal or sale purposes, rely on the official revenue record or a professional survey, because small measuring errors add up across large areas.
Quick mental check
Remember that a hectare is roughly two and a half acres. If a 10-acre field comes out as 25 hectares, you multiplied instead of dividing. Ten acres should be about 4 hectares.
