CGPA to Percentage: Conversion Methods and What to Use

CGPA Calculator – free online tool guide

Government job portals, some private employers and many foreign applications still ask for a percentage, even though your degree shows a CGPA. Converting is not as simple as it looks, because each university can use a different method. This guide explains the main ways to convert CGPA to percentage and how to calculate your CGPA first with our CGPA Calculator.

Start with the right CGPA

Make sure you have your final cumulative figure, weighted by credit hours. Our guide on how to calculate CGPA explains it, and the GPA Calculator handles individual semesters.

Method 1: Your university’s official method

Many universities publish a conversion formula or table in the student handbook, on the transcript, or through an equivalence certificate issued by the examinations department. This is the method recruiters and admission offices are most likely to accept.

Method 2: Simple proportion

Percentage = CGPA ÷ 4 × 100

A CGPA of 3.40 gives 85%. This is quick, but it often produces a higher figure than the marks you actually scored, because a grade of A starts at around 85% while carrying the full 4.0 points.

Method 3: Band-based estimate

You can estimate where your CGPA sits within the grade bands. A CGPA of 3.40 sits between B+ (3.30) and A− (3.70), which on a common scale corresponds to marks of about 75% to 84%. This shows why different methods give different answers.

Example comparison

CGPA Simple proportion Band-based estimate
2.80 70% around 68% to 70%
3.20 80% around 74% to 77%
3.60 90% around 78% to 82%

These estimates are for illustration only; always follow the official method where one exists.

What to write on forms

  • If the form accepts CGPA, enter it with the scale, such as 3.40/4.00.
  • If it insists on a percentage, use your university’s method and keep proof.
  • Never invent a precise figure without a basis; if questioned, you will need to explain it.

Division

Some forms ask for First or Second Division. Universities define CGPA ranges for each division; check your handbook or ask the registrar. For school and board results, the Percentage Calculator converts marks directly.
