Courier charges depend on weight, so a few grams can push a parcel into a higher slab. Weighing parcels accurately helps you quote the right shipping fee, avoid disputes and plan costs. This guide explains how to weigh a package accurately, with our free Package Weight Calculator to estimate weight before packing.
Choose the right scale
| Scale | Capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen or postal scale | Up to about 5 to 10 kg | Small parcels, envelopes |
| Platform shipping scale | 30 to 150 kg | E-commerce boxes |
| Floor or pallet scale | 500 kg and more | Pallets and bulk cargo |
Choose a scale with a resolution of 1 to 10 g for small parcels.
Calibrate regularly
Check your scale with a known weight, such as a sealed 1 kg pack or a calibration weight. Scales drift over time, especially if moved often.
Weigh the finished parcel
Weigh after packing and sealing, including:
- The box or mailer
- Filler and bubble wrap
- Tape and labels
- Invoices or inserts
Packaging can add 10 to 30% to a light item’s weight.
Place it correctly
Put the parcel in the centre of the platform, make sure it does not touch anything else, and wait for the reading to stabilise.
Rounding rules
Couriers usually round weight up:
| Actual weight | Rounded (0.5 kg slabs) |
|---|---|
| 0.42 kg | 0.5 kg |
| 1.08 kg | 1.5 kg |
| 2.51 kg | 3.0 kg |
Remember volumetric weight too; see the Volumetric Weight Calculator.
Estimating before packing
Add product weight + box weight + filler. Box weights are covered in how much a cardboard box weighs.
Record weights
Keep a list of standard weights for each product and box combination. It speeds up dispatch and helps catch errors.
