How Monthly Savings Grow: The Power of Saving Every Month

Compound Interest Calculator – free online tool guide

You do not need a large lump sum to build wealth. Saving a fixed amount every month and letting it grow is how most people reach big goals: a house deposit, children’s education or a comfortable retirement. This guide shows how monthly savings grow over time, with examples from our Compound Interest Calculator.

The examples

Assume a return of 10% a year, compounded monthly.

Monthly saving 5 years 10 years 20 years
Rs 5,000 about Rs 387,000 about Rs 1.02 million about Rs 3.80 million
Rs 10,000 about Rs 774,000 about Rs 2.05 million about Rs 7.59 million
Rs 20,000 about Rs 1.55 million about Rs 4.10 million about Rs 15.2 million

Notice that from 10 to 20 years the amount nearly quadruples, even though you only save for twice as long. That is compounding.

How much of it is your money?

For Rs 10,000 a month over 20 years, you deposit Rs 2.4 million. The rest, over Rs 5 million, is growth. In the early years most of the balance is your deposits; in the later years most of it is returns.

Starting early beats saving more later

Two savers both aim for age 55:

  • Sana saves Rs 10,000 a month from 25 to 35, then stops (10 years, Rs 1.2 million deposited).
  • Bilal saves Rs 10,000 a month from 35 to 55 (20 years, Rs 2.4 million deposited).

At 10% a year, Sana ends with more than Bilal, despite saving half as much, because her money had 20 extra years to grow.

Realistic returns

Returns depend on where you save: bank deposits, government savings schemes, mutual funds or stocks. Higher potential returns usually come with more risk. Inflation also reduces what your money will buy, so compare returns with inflation. The Percentage Calculator helps compare rates.

Make it automatic

Set a standing order on payday so savings leave your account before you can spend them. If your salary arrives on a fixed date, the Salary Day Countdown shows when. Budgeting with the 50/30/20 rule is a good way to find the monthly amount.

Increase savings with every raise

When you get a raise, increase your savings by part of it. Raising a Rs 10,000 monthly saving by 10% each year makes a large difference after 20 years.

Understand the maths

If you want to see exactly how these figures are produced, our guide to the compound interest formula walks through each step. For a specific target date, the Months Until Calculator tool counts the months you have left to save.
