If you are paid every two weeks, as many people working in North America and some companies elsewhere are, you get 26 paychecks a year, not 24. That means two months each year contain three paydays. Planned well, those “extra” paychecks can make a real difference. This guide explains three-paycheck months and how to find them with our Paydays Left This Year tool.
Why it happens
A year has 52 weeks. Biweekly pay means 52 ÷ 2 = 26 paydays. Twelve months × 2 = 24, so 2 paydays are left over, falling in two months that get a third payday.
Finding them
Enter your next payday and choose biweekly. The tool lists all remaining paydays. Look for months with three dates.
Budget on two paychecks
The smartest approach is to build your monthly budget around two paychecks only. Then the third paycheck in those two months is free for goals, instead of quietly disappearing into everyday spending.
Ideas for the extra paycheck
| Use | Why |
|---|---|
| Emergency fund | Builds security |
| Extra loan payment | Saves interest; see the Loan Calculator |
| Annual bills | Insurance, fees, renewals |
| Big goal savings | Travel, education, home |
| Sending money home | Planned support for family |
Example
Biweekly net pay of $1,800. Two extra paychecks a year = $3,600 that would otherwise vanish. Put it into savings and, with compounding, it grows; the Compound Interest Calculator shows how.
Semi-monthly is different
Semi-monthly pay (twice a month on fixed dates) gives exactly 24 paydays, with no extra months. Read pay schedules explained for the differences.
Planning the rest of the year
Count paydays left to reach a goal. If you need $2,000 by December and have 6 paydays left, set aside about $333 each payday. For general budgeting tips, read saving by paycheck.
