A freelance client offers $12 an hour, a part-time job pays Rs 600 an hour, and a full-time role offers Rs 180,000 a month. Which is best? You can only compare them once they are in the same unit. This guide shows how to convert an hourly rate to a monthly salary and back, with simple formulas and our free Hourly ↔ Monthly Salary calculator.
The formula
Monthly salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 ÷ 12
There are about 4.33 weeks in a month (52 ÷ 12), not 4.
Examples
| Hourly rate | Hours per week | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Rs 600 | 20 | Rs 52,000 |
| Rs 900 | 40 | Rs 156,000 |
| Rs 1,000 | 48 | Rs 208,000 |
| $12 | 40 | $2,080 |
Monthly salary to hourly rate
Hourly rate = monthly salary × 12 ÷ (hours per week × 52)
Rs 180,000 a month at 45 hours a week = 2,160,000 ÷ 2,340 = Rs 923 an hour.
Why multiplying by 4 is wrong
If you multiply weekly pay by 4, you lose about 8% of the year. Rs 900 × 40 × 4 = Rs 144,000, while the correct monthly figure is Rs 156,000.
Freelancers: billable vs worked hours
Freelancers rarely bill every hour they work. Finding clients, admin and revisions take time. If you work 40 hours but bill 28, use 28 in the formula. Read how to set a freelance hourly rate for more.
Converting currency
For dollar rates, convert the monthly figure into rupees with the USD to PKR converter. Remember platform fees and withdrawal charges.
Comparing with a full-time job
A full-time job may include paid leave, medical cover, bonuses and provident fund. Add their monthly value before comparing with an hourly rate. The Salary Calculator breaks a salary into yearly, monthly, daily and hourly amounts.
Overtime
Hours beyond the normal schedule may be paid at a higher rate. Track them with the Working Hours Calculator.
