What is the Zakat Calculator?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: 2.5% of qualifying wealth that has been held for a full lunar year, once it is above the nisab threshold. The zakat calculator adds up your zakatable assets, subtracts debts due now and shows the zakat payable.
Enter today's gold and silver prices to set the nisab in rupees. To value jewellery in tola or grams first use the Gold Calculator; for today's Islamic date see Islamic Date Today (Hijri Converter).
How to use the Zakat Calculator
- Enter cash and bank balances.
- Enter gold and silver weight and today's price.
- Add business stock and money owed to you.
- Subtract debts and bills due now.
- Read the nisab check and zakat payable.
Formula
Zakat = 2.5% × (zakatable assets − immediate liabilities), if the net amount ≥ nisab
Example
With Rs 600,000 in savings, 3 tola of gold worth Rs 1,200,000 and Rs 100,000 of bills due, net wealth is Rs 1,700,000, so zakat is Rs 42,500.
Gold nisab vs silver nisab
The nisab is 87.48 g (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 g (52.5 tola) of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower and means more people give zakat; others use gold. Choose the one your scholar follows.
What is zakatable?
Your home, car, household items and tools of your trade are not zakatable.
- Cash at home and in bank accounts
- Gold and silver, including jewellery (per most Hanafi scholars)
- Business stock at selling value
- Shares and investments held for trade
- Money lent that you expect to get back
