How to Calculate Gold Price by Weight and Karat

Gold Calculator – free online tool guide

Gold rates in Pakistan are quoted per tola for 24-karat gold, but jewellery is usually 22K or 21K, sold by weight in tola, masha and ratti, with making charges on top. To know whether a price is fair, you need to calculate it yourself. This guide explains how to calculate gold price by weight and karat, with a worked example, using our free Gold Calculator.

Units of weight

Unit Equals
1 tola 11.664 grams
1 tola 12 masha
1 masha 8 ratti
10 grams 0.857 tola
1 troy ounce 31.1035 grams (2.67 tola)

Convert weights with the Gold Weight Converter or Tola to Grams.

Purity (karat)

Karat Gold content
24K 99.9%
22K 91.6%
21K 87.5%
18K 75%

The formula

Gold value = weight in tola × 24K rate per tola × (karat ÷ 24)

Worked example

A 22K necklace weighing 2 tola 4 masha, with a 24K rate of Rs 380,000 per tola (example).

  1. Weight: 2 + 4/12 = 2.333 tola
  2. Purity factor: 22 ÷ 24 = 0.9167
  3. Gold value: 2.333 × 380,000 × 0.9167 = Rs 812,800

Making charges

Jewellers add making charges for labour, either per tola or as a percentage. If making charges are Rs 15,000 per tola: 2.333 × 15,000 = Rs 35,000. Total: about Rs 847,800.

When selling

Jewellers typically buy back at the gold value minus a deduction for purity checks and wastage, and making charges are not refunded. That is why jewellery is a less efficient investment than coins or bars.

Checking the rate

Gold prices follow international prices in dollars and the rupee exchange rate. Local sarafa associations publish daily rates. Read why gold prices change in Pakistan.

For zakat
