What is the Qibla Direction Finder?
Muslims face the Kaaba in Makkah when praying. The Qibla direction finder calculates the exact bearing from your location to the Kaaba, measured clockwise from true North, and the great-circle distance.
On phones with a compass sensor, an arrow points towards the Qibla. For prayer times at the same location use Prayer Times (Namaz Timings); for today's Islamic date see Islamic Date Today (Hijri Converter).
How to use the Qibla Direction Finder
- Choose your city or press Use my location.
- Read the Qibla angle in degrees from North.
- On a phone, hold it flat and follow the arrow.
- Or use a compass to face the shown angle.
Formula
Bearing = atan2(sin Δλ · cos φ₂, cos φ₁ · sin φ₂ − sin φ₁ · cos φ₂ · cos Δλ)
Example
From Lahore, the Qibla is about 259° from North (a little south of west), and the Kaaba is about 3,700 km away. From Karachi it is about 267°.
Why the direction is not simply "west"
The shortest path on a sphere is a great circle, so the Qibla bearing is calculated with spherical trigonometry rather than a flat map. From Pakistan it is close to west but slightly south; from North America it is north-east.
Getting an accurate reading
- Keep the phone flat and away from metal and magnets.
- Calibrate the phone compass by moving it in a figure-eight.
- Compass apps show magnetic north; the difference from true north in Pakistan is small (1–3°).
- Cross-check with the sun: at local noon the sun is due south.
